Our Workshops

Trauma-Informed Conversations for Healthier Relationships and Safer Communities

We offer trauma-informed workshops that create space for honest dialogue, reflection, and learning.

This work supports individuals and communities in strengthening relationships, improving communication, and addressing the root causes of gender-based, intimate partner, and family violence.

Our approach is grounded in lived experience and shaped by an understanding of trauma, disconnection, and the lasting impacts of colonial history.

We partner with organizations, Indigenous communities, and groups across the North to support healing, strengthen relationships, and contribute to ongoing efforts toward reconciliation and community well-being.

These workshops are not just about addressing challenges—they are also about prevention, helping people build the awareness and skills needed to create healthier ways of relating moving forward.

Each session is adapted to the needs of your community and can be delivered in-person or virtually.

A Facilitated Approach

These workshops are led by Dr. Lovingson Mtongwiza, whose work is shaped by both lived experience and years of community engagement across the North.

His approach focuses on creating spaces where people feel safe enough to engage, reflect, and participate honestly—without pressure, but also without avoiding the conversations that matter.

This is not about delivering information.

It is about creating the conditions for meaningful conversation, understanding, and change.

1

Signature Workshop

Laughter as Medicine: Humour, Masculinity & Healthy Connection

This signature workshop uses humour and storytelling to engage men and boys in conversations that are often difficult to have.

Participants explore how humour shapes relationships and community culture, and learn to recognize the difference between humour that builds connection and humour that causes harm.

The workshop creates an accessible and respectful space for reflection, learning, and growth—meeting participants where they are while opening the door to deeper conversation.

Outcomes:

  • Increased awareness of how humour impacts relationships and community dynamics

  • Tools to use humour in ways that build trust, respect, and connection

  • Greater openness to emotional conversations among men and boys

2

Emotional Regulation & Communication

Support participants in understanding their emotions and responding in healthier, more intentional ways.

This workshop creates space to explore how emotions are experienced in the body and expressed in relationships. Many people have not been given the tools to understand or manage their emotional responses, especially in high-stress or conflict situations. Through guided discussion and practical examples, participants begin to recognize patterns, build awareness, and develop more grounded ways of communicating.

The focus is not on perfection, but on building the capacity to pause, reflect, and respond with intention rather than reaction.

Focus areas:

  • Understanding emotional triggers

  • Managing reactions in high-stress situations

  • Healthy communication and conflict resolution

Outcomes:

  • Improved communication skills

  • Reduced conflict and reactive behaviour

  • Greater emotional awareness

3

Healthy Relationships, Forgiveness & Reconciliation

Explore what it means to build safe, respectful, and balanced relationships within families and communities.

This workshop invites participants to reflect on how relationships are shaped by past experiences, learned behaviours, and community dynamics. It creates space to examine patterns of harm, accountability, and the possibility of rebuilding trust. Conversations around forgiveness and reconciliation are approached with care—acknowledging that healing is a process, not a demand.

Participants are supported in understanding how respect, boundaries, and responsibility contribute to stronger, healthier relationships over time.

Focus areas:

  • Boundaries and mutual respect

  • Accountability, forgiveness, and rebuilding trust

  • Recognizing patterns and cycles of harm

Outcomes:

  • Stronger understanding of healthy relationships

  • Tools for rebuilding trust and connection

  • Increased capacity for forgiveness and reconciliation

4

Men & Boys: Emotional Education & Identity

Create space for honest conversations with men and boys about masculinity, identity, and emotional awareness.

This workshop opens up dialogue around the expectations placed on men and boys, and how those expectations can shape behaviour, relationships, and emotional expression. Many participants have not had opportunities to explore these topics in a safe and respectful environment.

Through conversation, storytelling, and reflection, this session encourages participants to rethink what strength, responsibility, and connection can look like. It supports men and boys in building a healthier relationship with themselves and others.

Focus areas:

  • Emotional literacy for men and boys

  • Rethinking masculinity and responsibility

  • Building healthy relationship skills

Outcomes:

  • Increased emotional awareness

  • Healthier expressions of masculinity

  • Reduced harmful behaviours and patterns

5

Gender-Based Violence Awareness & Prevention

Support communities and organizations in understanding and addressing the roots of violence.

This workshop goes beyond awareness to explore the underlying factors that contribute to gender-based and family violence. It creates space for honest, respectful conversations about how harm develops, how it is sustained, and how it can be prevented.

Participants are encouraged to reflect on their roles within families, organizations, and communities, and how collective responsibility plays a part in creating safer environments. The approach balances clarity with care—ensuring the topic is addressed without overwhelming or shutting people down.

Focus areas:

  • Recognizing warning signs and patterns

  • Understanding contributing factors

  • Prevention, early intervention, and shared responsibility

Outcomes:

  • Increased awareness and prevention strategies

  • Stronger capacity for early intervention

  • Safer environments for individuals and families

6

Community Healing, Connection & Reconciliation

Support stronger relationships and trust within communities through respectful and trauma-informed engagement.

This workshop focuses on rebuilding connection in spaces where trust may have been impacted by past harm, disconnection, or systemic challenges. It recognizes that healing is not a single event, but an ongoing process that involves listening, understanding, and relationship-building.

Participants are invited into dialogue that honours lived experience, culture, and community knowledge. The goal is to create space for conversations that support healing while strengthening the relationships that sustain communities over time.

Focus areas:

  • Trauma-informed communication

  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity

  • Rebuilding trust and strengthening relationships

Outcomes:

  • Stronger community relationships

  • Increased empathy and understanding

  • Safer spaces for dialogue, healing, and reconciliation
